Favorite track: Otoliths.
Can This Even Be Called Music?
Can This Even Be Called Music? thumbnail
Can This Even Be Called Music? They are far from being just another prog band, as they incorporate influences from math rock, jazz, alternative rock, and more. All of this is evident on their latest record, Countenance, which displays an enormous stylistic range (and a huge progression from their previous records, which did not include many of these elements).

even though nothing's predictable mental or physical you're an exception, the outcome is known still no hesitation is visible I'll keep a list till your tissue is sewn and you're blissfully cloned do you really not yet know I define a nameless shape I define a markless gauge I define a pitchless tone what use can you find for a man who reached out a hand but who's reaching the end of his useful lifespan? you said, "we won't get very far, I don't know what you are but I know what you aren't" can you really not quite see I define a pitchless tone empty set of braces closed I define a keyless code when I was young enough to still believe some elusive half-remembered dream now I know too much to ever sleep sleep easy sleep easy

Vestigial 05:30
vestigial twin, you're in me hair, nails, teeth, and skin vestigial twin, you're in me hair, nails, teeth, teeth, teeth and skin never to be cleansed of that original sin are you, who are you, who are you? are you everything are you everything are you everything you say that you are are you everything are you everything are you everything are you every little thing you say that you are vestigial twin, I feel you beat beneath the breast vestigial twin, convulse within my tumor-swollen chest blind to the sight of your parasitic duress are you, who are you, who are you? are you everything are you everything are you everything you say that you are are you everything are you everything are you everything are you every little thing you say that you are would you? would, would, would you recommend? would you? would, would, would you recommend my body? would you? would, would, would you recommend my body to a friend? hard pressed. hard, hard, hard pressed up against. hard pressed. hard, hard, hard pressed up against my body. hard pressed. hard, hard, hard pressed up against my body till the end. with you removed, with you removed, with you removed I am hollow. without you removed, without you removed, without you removed I am hollow too. with you removed, with you removed, with you removed I am hollow. without you removed, without you removed, without you removed I am hollow too hollow for you.

Otoliths 10:55
every day splits me in two make it three including you reaching outward for a place to step with no regrets I find different faces every time your embrace occluding mine though you never meant to go just couldn't stay I know why remove the sky remove the sky to keep the sky from falling remove the sky remove the sky to keep the sky from falling same obstruction on each side your retreat enables mine I could never give you anything you didn't have before are we lucky just to find something new to leave behind? sit and breathe in the exhausting trail of failure at no cost remove the sky remove the sky to keep the sky from falling remove the sky remove the sky to keep the sky from falling I might have known you'd grow these stones deep in your ears I've watched your cells divide themselves to build these cysts these otoliths I know what I know I know what I know now that I know what I know that I know how do I know that I know? remove the sky remove the sky to keep the sky from falling and fill your ears with what you hear from me but don't believe where we exist in otoliths

To Serve Man 05:28
I served you well congealing, how the tastes gel how fine a wine to offset the perfect entree how sweet it is for you to chew on this cartilaginous tissue lick up the remains of those who brought their broken marrow bones to you feed me feed me red meat when you serve man feed me spleen when you serve man strange how we obtain our nourishment from others' hearts and brains and hide the faded stains of past extractions and actions you'll be leaving in the past feed me feed me red meat when you serve man feed me spleen when you serve man drinking the sweat of a drowning man drinking the sweat of a drowning man

bring him down to dredge the unfiltered bottom high hopes for keeping the secrets quiet he brings words of hell for corrupted heavens he hides lies on a single drive hold him down until he follows the path of those who hide the truth from our eyes he'll hold out until he follows the path of those who never cared for the creatures we are pin a man for the crimes of those who were too scared to speak up pin a man for the lives of those who died for an empire hold still in the story you've derived from the blighted truth we contrived don't hold out just follow the line or we'll start the clock that severs you from time pin a man for the crimes of those who were too scared to speak up pin a man for the lives of the parasites who pined for an empire

now please receive this false meaning I give to you won't you distort like the lens I refract you through? false meaning speaking of living like dreaming the way you do please recollect, I expect that you do this false meaning I give to you like you asked me to now please receive this false meaning I give to you won't you distort like the lens I refract you through? false meaning speaking of living like dreaming the way you do please recollect, I expect that you do this false meaning I give to you like you asked me to like you asked me to sometimes I wonder about you sometimes I wonder about you

Artifracture 04:05
n-n-n-n-n-n-now fallen on top of your sword pull an intestinal cord pull every inch of them out look at them all on the ground shape the guts into some words name everybody you hurt doesn't make up for it if you had only known that one known unknown that you often were shown if you had only if you had only seen what everyone could that might have been good, no? n-n-n-n-n-n-now say that it's under control behind you the video rolls archival footage is shown what's going on in there now? "don't know, but we'll work it out" meanwhile we count on one hand those who almost understand there will be no disposition of the fission factor there will be no exposition of the fourth reactor atom age, adjourn your aegis never be recaptured atom age, adjourn your aegis in the artifracture no use to point fingers now why should we bring up the past? please leave the area fast unfit for humans to last (fall on your sword) got our priorities straight (artifracture) open the wastewater gate (under control) it's just a little too late (artifracture) to wash out the evidence

about

Why wouldn't there be a dragon in space?

PROG Magazine (issue 54): "More dizzyingly ambitious prog from Portland, Oregon... 'Otoliths' is a complex trek through the genres, perfectly implemented by a band to be admired for their captivating technique and sonic mettle. The instrumental 'Mazz Jathy' is, as the name suggests, a clattering bonding of math rock and jazz. Like the similarly ambitious 'Jazz Hands of Doom,' it's both bewildering and persuasive."
